the key strategies for recruitment success.

It’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of Christmas and before you know it January is upon you. January is a key month for recruiting new staff because of the ‘new year, new me’ sentiment, and you’ll want to be ready to capitalise on that.

A new job or career change is often on the top of people’s to-do lists in January. The best way to make sure you’re in a position to take advantage of this and attract top talent to your business is to stay ahead of the game and be prepared – and that’s where we can help. Our blog covers some of the key points you should incorporate into your next recruitment campaign and how we can help you attract people to join you, showcasing your business as a great place to work.

Step one is to define the roles you have available. For each of your vacancies, you can create a picture of what the ideal candidate looks like, based on the skills they possess to fulfil the role. Similarly, the top candidates will have their own expectations of your business and you as an employer. So you need to sell your business along with the role. They may want the role but if the business offering it doesn’t appeal they’re unlikely to apply.

We should point out that with any recruitment endeavour, there’s a lot of information to convey. It won’t all fit onto a job advertisement, so think about how you can optimise your careers page to cover as many of the points below as possible.

01 | Advertise careers not jobs.

With any role you advertise, always highlight the development and progression opportunities that come with it. Most job seekers will make career-focused decisions when looking for new positions, so clearly outline how your business can help them grow and flourish – personally and professionally. If you have clear career paths in place the best applicants will be more motivated to apply.

02 | Promote your perks and benefits.

Always try and address the question: Why work with us and not them? Besides development opportunities, jobseekers will be looking at the whole package, and this means the perks and benefits you offer. At the top of their list they’ll want to know about:

  • Flexible working opportunities to help them manage their work/life balance
  • Your holiday allowance and whether it increases over time
  • Pension scheme details and where possible the employer contribution
  • Sports and social activities (no, “we have a pool table” won’t do)
  • Other employee incentives like healthcare, cycle to work, childcare vouchers etc.

03 | Share employee testimonials.

When it comes to assessing employers, reviews from employees play a large role. They will check Glassdoor, Indeed and other sites and read the reviews from current and former employees. There’s not too much you can do to influence these reviews – unless you run an internal referral programme (which is a topic for another time) – but you can share testimonials from your engaged employees, touching upon the development opportunities and the company culture. Your employees are your biggest advocates so get them involved!

In addition, if your recruitment campaign involves social media (which it really should), encourage your employees to share and comment on the posts, as this kind of word of mouth recommendation is hugely influential.

04 | Shout about your successes.

If you’ve won industry awards and public accolades in the past then you need to highlight these achievements. People naturally want to work for a successful winning team, so recognise the fact that you’ve been recognised! Boasting is encouraged, particularly if it supports our final point…

05 | Show that you’re a responsible business.

These days employees are much more conscious of the social, ethical and environmental impact of the companies they work for and the suppliers they use. As such you should always promote your organisation’s core values, including your commitments around workplace diversity and inclusion, sustainability and wider corporate social responsibility. If your values align then people are far more likely to want to work with you.
