Get up to speed with the latest digital trend predictions for 2023.

The most effective ways to market your business are forever changing, and the digital marketing landscape is always shifting, so it’s important to keep an eye on the latest services, products, and tools.

Read on to find out more about the digital marketing trends that could boost your business in 2023.

01 | More businesses using TikTok

Sharing content on TikTok is likely to be fairly new to most small business owners. But in 2023 it’s something that can’t be avoided for much longer. Posting content on TikTok is one thing, but getting it seen by your target audience is likely to be harder. It is important to think about how you can encourage people to interact with your content. In addition, make sure you put time into titles and hashtags: the platform shows people videos based on their interests, so targeted titles and tags can put your posts in front of the right people. Finally, a lot of TikTok’s most popular videos are based on songs and audio clips. How can you use these to your advantage? Keep an eye on what trending.

02 | The rise of podcast advertising

Podcasts are now attracting significant ad spending, with many businesses embracing them as an important element of their brand marketing campaigns. Last year expenditure in the UK hit £46 million, and that figure is expected to almost double over the next four years. Podcast advertising is particularly effective as podcasts are proactively selected by the listener, which means they’re much more invested in a topic and by association, the products and services advertised within. Plus, they go wherever the listener goes. You can read more about the benefits of podcast advertising here.

03 | Alternatives to third-party data

Third-party cookies will soon be a thing of the past. As they’re used to track a user’s browsing habits they have always led to concerns around privacy, and now Google is planning to block third-party cookies in its omnipresent Chrome browser in 2024. That’s still a while off, but the one thing that all businesses should be doing right now is focus on their first-party customer data. You need to start discovering as much as possible about your own customers in order to segment and target them, so this means devising ways of collecting additional insight and data – finding out who your customers really are and what makes them tick. Find out more about the death of third-party cookies and what it means for businesses like yours here.

04 | Vertical video content to remain invaluable

Since Instagram adopted reels to compete with TikTok, short-form vertical videos have become a digital marketing essential. These videos are cheap and quick to make, plus they can be repurposed across multiple platforms with little editing. Short-form vertical videos help to bring a brand to life and can be used to highlight your company culture, and could add a sense of humour to your brand that resonates with potential customers. In 2022 it became clear that Instagram users who want to get their posts seen by more people need to be creating reels. As people become used to viewing content this way, the importance of this video format will almost certainly rise further in 2023.

05 | Sustainability and social responsibility

Consumers are more conscious of the social and environmental impact of who they buy from and what they buy. For many small businesses, this presents an opportunity to explain more about your social or environmental purpose in your marketing. For example, your business may use recycled or recyclable materials, or consciously limit the use of packaging. Alternatively, you could give some of your profits to a charitable cause or volunteer in the local community. If this is an area that you’ve not given much thought to previously then 2023 will be an apt time to address this.
